On June 30, a ritual called “Nagoshi no Harai” was held at shrines across Japan. It is said that this ritual used to be performed on the summer solstice. Participants walk through a ring made of a grass called “chigaya” and circle it in a figure-eight pattern about three times. This is done to pray for good health and safety for the remainder of the year.
I first learned about this when I saw it at Kashima Jingu Shrine in Chiba Prefecture. Even though I’m Japanese, I had no idea this event existed. From now on, I plan to take part in it and pray for a peaceful second half of the year.
